A Prisoner of the Mind milestone has been reached. It has been a real chess match to publish this graphic novel, but all of the pieces are now in place for a complete launch. All artwork (pencil and ink) for Volume One is complete, the covers are painted and approved. The book is laid out and the lettering is almost done on the final chapter.
Here is a sample of a rough layout sketch from Prisoner of the Mind. When it comes down to editing, you never know what’s going to be cut until the end.

It was always my intention to release the Prisoner of the Mind graphic novel as a comic book series. Each chapter was intentionally structured to be the same length as a comic book. Volume One of this graphic novel has five chapters and Volume Two will most likely have the same number.

This too is a rough sketch from Prisoner of the Mind.

When the print edition comic book is released this year along with a digital version, the hard and soft cover graphic novel will become available soon after. There will be a few twists and turns and some surprises too when the book is finally released. Stay tuned, because the first issue will be made available on this blog as a digital edition free.

Progress, is the title of an original painting that I created a few years ago. The work was just featured on the Artists2Artists website and I received a nice review by one of their curators. It may not mean much to you, but any artist will tell you that validation keeps the fire burning.

You can check it out here If you like.

Final digital paint of the Starfire re-design.

Starfire was one of those characters that was not mainstream for me. George Pérez really did a nice job of designing this character in the 80's, but I just wasn’t into flying women with flaming hair. I liked Conan the Barbarian, Batman, Spiderman, X-Men ... So, this character was a challenge for me. Even though she is an alien with a human form, I decided to give her a little more of a human touch. She was originally very muscular, and chiseled. I like the idea of making her more feminine. I also thought that her flaming hair doesn’t need to be on jet power all the time. It's still hot, like an idling engine dropping molten sparks to the floor.

Final ink of the Starfire re-design.

The way to break up the monotony of drawing a 300 page graphic novel is to draw something totally different. That is the case here. I occasionally need to take a break from the dark brooding Noir and hammer out something on the lighter side. It keeps me balanced. This is an entry for a re-design contest over at Super Hero Of The Month. I've had my fun, now it's back to work!

Gorilla Grodd Digital Paint

Well not really... This is my interpretation of Gorilla Grodd for an art contest over at Superhero of the month. I had a little time over the holidaze to do some sketching so I thought I would put my pencil to good use. Here is the rough digital paint version and the original sketch, all in the name of fun.

Gorilla Grodd Rough Sketch

The title of this piece is: "I know what you're thinking". The original Gorilla Grodd was created in 1959 as a telepathic supervillain. Here, I decided to give him a little class... and... well, you get the idea.

Joe Simon, you will be missed. You, and Jack Kirby did some great work together that was actually some of my favorite artwork and stories out there. RIP!
